SafeSalt is a unique electrolyte (NaCl; sodium and chloride) to overcome problems with palatability, gastric upset, and gastric ulceration. Individual grains of salt are encapsulated in a lipid (oil) coating which will not dissolve in the mouth or stomach. When the grain reaches the small intestine, where uptake is optimal, the oil coating dissolves, ensuring efficient absorption that is gentle on the stomach.
Although salt and electrolytes can be added to feed, horses often find these unpalatable and their granular nature means that it is easy for picky horses to leave them at the bottom of the feed manger. There is also evidence that ordinary salt can cause or worsen gastric ulcers in horses as it passes through the stomach. SafeSalt is a unique encapsulated formulation that provides a consistent source of sodium and chloride that overcomes these potential palatability problems.
